Ready to take your crochet skills to the next level?

The Crochet Basics Builder Class is designed for crocheters who are comfortable with the fundamental stitches and are ready to expand their skills. We’ll build on the techniques learned in the basics or refresher class and introduce essential skills that will help you tackle a wider variety of crochet patterns and projects with confidence.

This class focuses on understanding how crochet works beyond the basic stitches—from reading patterns and checking gauge to shaping your work, creating texture, and changing colors.

Prerequisites

Students should already be comfortable with the following crochet basics:

  • Chain Stitch
  • Slip Stitch
  • Single Crochet
  • Half Double Crochet
  • Double Crochet
  • Turning Your Work
  • Counting Stitches

If you need a little practice with these skills first, the Crochet Basics Refresher Class is a great place to start.

Materials

Materials will be available for students to use during class, and supplies will also be available for purchase in the store.

If you prefer to bring your own supplies, please bring:

  • 2 skein of #4 Worsted Weight yarn in contrasting colors of any brand
  • 4mm Crochet Hook
  • 5mm Crochet Hook
  • 6mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch Markers

Skills We’ll Learn

During class, we’ll introduce and practice:

  • Reading a Crochet Pattern — Understanding common abbreviations, symbols, repeats, and instructions
  • Understanding Crochet Hook Sizes — Exploring the different sizes of crochet hooks and learning how hook size affects stitch size, tension, drape, and the overall appearance of your finished project. We’ll also discuss how to match hook sizes with different yarn weights, understand U.S. and metric hook sizing, and determine when you may need to adjust your hook size to achieve the correct gauge.
  • Gauge & Swatching — Learning why gauge matters and how to create and measure a gauge swatch
  • Blocking — Understanding how blocking can shape and finish your crochet projects
  • Increases & Decreases — Learning how to add and remove stitches to shape your work
  • Front Loop & Back Loop Crochet — Working into individual loops to create texture and different effects
  • Front Post & Back Post Stitches — Creating raised textures and ribbed designs
  • Color Changes — Learning clean techniques for introducing and changing yarn colors

What You’ll Gain

By the end of this class, you’ll have a stronger understanding of crochet construction and the skills needed to begin working on more advanced projects.

You’ll leave with greater confidence in reading patterns, shaping projects, creating texture, working with multiple colors, and selecting the right techniques for your next crochet project.

Build your skills. Expand your creativity. Take the next step in your crochet journey!
