Ready to move beyond crocheting in rows?
The Crocheting in the Round Class introduces the techniques you need to create circular and three-dimensional crochet projects. Working in the round opens the door to an entirely new range of projects, including hats, baskets, bags, coasters, amigurumi, and more.
In this hands-on class, you’ll learn different methods for starting and working in the round, how to create a flat circle, and how increases and decreases affect the shape of your work. We’ll also explore the differences between joined and continuous rounds before putting those skills together to create a three-dimensional sphere.
Prerequisites
Students should already be comfortable with:
- Chain Stitch
- Slip Stitch
- Single Crochet
- Half Double Crochet
- Double Crochet
- Increases & Decreases
- Counting Stitches
Students who need additional practice with these techniques may want to complete the Crochet Basics Refresher and Crochet Basics Builder classes first.
Materials
Materials will be available for students to use during class, and supplies will also be available for purchase in the store.
If you prefer to bring your own supplies, please bring:
- 1 skein of worsted-weight yarn in a light color
- 5 mm crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Stitch markers
A light-colored yarn is recommended because it makes individual stitches easier to see while learning and counting rounds.
Skills We’ll Learn
During class, we’ll introduce and practice:
- Starting with a Chain Circle — Learning how to create a foundation ring using chain stitches and a slip stitch.
- Making a Magic Circle — Learning the adjustable magic circle technique for creating a neat, tightly closed center.
- Creating a Flat Circle — Understanding how increases are spaced to create a circle that lies flat.
- Adjusting Your Increases — Recognizing when your work has too many or too few increases and learning how to make adjustments to maintain the desired shape.
- Joined Rounds vs. Continuous Spirals — Exploring two common methods for crocheting in the round, how to identify each method in a pattern, and when each technique may be used.
- Using Stitch Markers — Learning how stitch markers can help identify the beginning and end of rounds, especially when working in a continuous spiral.
- Creating a Sphere — Combining increases, even rounds, and decreases to transform a flat circle into a three-dimensional shape.
What You’ll Gain
By the end of class, you’ll have a better understanding of how stitch placement, increases, and decreases create shape when crocheting in the round.
These techniques provide an important foundation for moving into projects such as hats, baskets, bags, stuffed animals, amigurumi, and other three-dimensional crochet projects.
Go beyond straight rows and discover a whole new dimension of crochet!
